FAQs

Cockpen chairs are an 18th-century British chair design characterised by geometric lattice backrests, heavily influenced by Chinese Chippendale aesthetics and popularised in Scottish country houses.

These chairs are traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or ash, frequently featuring drop-in seats upholstered in leather, horsehair, or woven rush.

Authentic pieces are identified through traditional joinery methods, such as tenon joints, hand-cut components, patina on the timber, and specific geometric construction of the fretwork back.

They function effectively as statement pieces in eclectic spaces, pairing well with minimalist modern tables to contrast crisp lines with intricate historical woodwork.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber drying, and applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the wood.
