This pair of Japanese Imari porcelain vases dates from the Meiji Period around 1890. Each baluster-shaped vessel is formed in ceramic with a glossy white glaze finish, decorated in typical Imari colours of cobalt blue underglaze and iron-red enamel. The surface displays hand-painted shaped panels containing flowering trees before fences, divided by large stylised birds on a foliage-strewn ground, while the necks and bases show continuous lappet motifs. Measuring 26 cm in height with a 16 cm diameter, these decorative containers suit placement on a sideboard top in an English country house setting. They provide an authentic ornamental accent for living spaces or hallways, serving as striking focal points when displayed together.

Imari porcelain, originating from the Arita region in Japan, is characterised by its distinctive palette of underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red enamels, often embellished with detailed floral motifs. During the Meiji period (18681912), production expanded significantly to meet European demand for decorative Asian ceramics.

These pieces were crafted from kaolin clay mined in Arita, hand-formed, and fired at high temperatures. Underglaze cobalt blue decoration was applied before the initial firing, followed by hand-painted iron-red enamels fired at lower temperatures in subsequent kiln runs.

Authentic late 19th-century Imari displays slight asymmetry in hand-painted execution, minor variations in glaze thickness, and subtle signs of age such as gentle foot-rim wear or small kiln firing marks. Look for rich cobalt tones and hand-applied iron-red pigments rather than uniform modern printed transfers.

Displaying a pair symmetrically atop a dark wood sideboard, marble mantelpiece, or console table introduces visual balance and rich colour. Their vibrant palette pairs well with traditional English country, eclectic, or contemporary maximalist aesthetics.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush to prevent abrading surface enamels. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive sponges, or immersion in hot water, as rapid temperature shifts can stress aged glazes.
