This antique Japanese Imari vase, dating from 1900, is a porcelain vessel finished with a high gloss glaze. The bulbous body displays a fluted shape and is decorated with hand-painted floral cartouches, iron-red foliage, and trees against a white ground, complemented by cobalt blue borders and gilded details. The palette incorporates dark blue, bright orange, and white, with a band of interlocking geometric triangles around the lower base and smaller circular motifs encircling the rim. Three distinct visual details include the scalloped outline framing the central floral panel, the textured vertical ribbing along the lower section, and the intricate lattice pattern rendered within the miniature fence motif near the base. Measuring 20 cm high, 17 cm wide, and 17 cm deep, the piece works well displayed on a mantelpiece within an English Country House interior setting.

Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan and takes its name from the port of Imari, from which it was exported to Europe beginning in the seventeenth century. Characterised by distinct underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red enamels, these pieces became highly sought after by European nobility and established a long-standing tradition of Japanese ceramic exports.

Traditional Imari ceramics are crafted from hard-paste kaolin clay fired at high temperatures. Decoration involves applying underglaze cobalt blue before the initial firing, followed by overglaze enamel detailspredominantly iron-red and gold embellishmentswhich are set during a second, lower-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic pieces display hand-painted brushwork with natural slight variations in enamel thickness and gilding. Inspect the underside for unglazed foot rims showing smooth wear, potential spur marks from kiln firing, and the characteristic palette of underglaze cobalt blue paired with iron-red and gilt details.

In corporate or residential interiors, an Imari vase provides visual warmth and historical contrast when placed on dark wood sideboards, mantelpieces, or marble tabletops. The vibrant cobalt blue and orange palette complements both classic period furnishings and clean-lined contemporary spaces.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, scrubbing pads, or dishwashers, as these can wear down delicate overglaze enamels and gilding. Support the vase by its base rather than the rim when handling.
