This antique Japanese Imari porcelain vase from 1900 displays a baluster shape with a narrow rim and a rounded body tapering toward the base. The exterior features hand-painted underglaze blue banding, orange and white enamelled panels, and gilded highlights depicting figures in a garden setting beneath cherry blossom trees, complemented by a lotus leaf border at the bottom. Cobalt blue, orange, white, and gold form the primary palette across the glazed ceramic surface. The piece measures 23 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. Placed on a sideboard top, it brings traditional Asian craftsmanship and vibrant colour to an English country house interior, serving as a decorative display vessel or holding small floral stems.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced around the town of Arita and shipped via the port of Imari, characterised by a distinctive colour palette of underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red and gilt ornamentation.

Imari ware is crafted from kaolin-rich hard-paste porcelain, decorated first with underglaze cobalt blue before a high-temperature firing, followed by hand-applied enamel colours and gold leaf applied prior to a secondary enamel kiln firing.

Authentic pieces exhibit subtle hand-painted variations in line weight, an unglazed foot rim showing fine white porcelain clay, characteristic blue decoration near the base, and minor wear to the raised overglaze enamels.

An Imari vase works as an artistic focal point on a dark wood sideboard, within a open bookcase, or positioned on a mantelpiece to add pattern and historical contrast against contemporary backdrops.

Preserve the porcelain by wiping softly with a lint-free cloth or washing gently in lukewarm water with mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive chemicals, hot water, or immersion that could loosen delicate overglaze enamel and gilding.
