This Japanese Imari porcelain vase, dating from 1900, takes a baluster form and stands 20 cm high, 8 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. The piece is finished in a glossy white glaze and decorated with hand-painted cobalt blue motifs depicting birds amongst foliage and flowers, set against a white ground. Details include a distinctive frilled, fluted, and wavy rim atop a slender neck, complemented by fine underglaze blue brushwork across the rounded body. Today, this antique vase suits placement on a mantelpiece to bring a decorative touch to an English Country House interior. The composition works well styled with single stems or simply displayed on its own on a wooden surface.

Japanese blue and white porcelain, often associated with Arita and Imari production centres, began in the early seventeenth century following the discovery of kaolin clay in Hizen province. The style was heavily influenced by Chinese imports but developed distinct regional aesthetic characteristics, featuring nature-inspired motifs under a clear glaze.

These pieces are crafted from high-grade kaolin porcelain clay, decorated with ground cobalt oxide pigment applied directly onto the unfired body. A translucent feldspathic glaze is applied over the decoration before high-temperature firing, which turns the cobalt a deep shade of blue.

Authentic historic pieces exhibit signs of hand craftsmanship, including subtle variations in the freehand cobalt brushwork and slight irregularities in the body shape. Examining the unglazed foot rim often reveals fine white porcelain clay, sometimes with age-appropriate wear and kiln marks.

Blue and white ceramics serve as versatile accents in modern interiors when grouped on mantelpieces, integrated into bookshelf displays, or placed as a standalone centrepiece on console tables. Their classic colour palette pairs naturally with dark timber, marble surfaces, and neutral linen textiles.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth or microfibre duster. If washing is necessary, use lukewarm water with a mild pH-neutral detergent, avoiding abrasive pads or chemical cleaners that could damage microscopic glaze imperfections.
