Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita region of Hizen province and shipped through the port of Imari. Developed in the seventeenth century, it gained widespread popularity in Europe for its distinct palette of underglaze blue and overglaze iron red with gilded highlights.

Traditional Imari wares are made from fine white kaolin clay, thrown on a potters wheel, and fired at high temperatures. The cobalt blue decoration is applied under the glaze before the initial firing, followed by hand-painted enamel colours and gilding applied over the glaze for a second firing.

Authentic pieces display hand-painted brushwork with slight irregularities, subtle glaze spur marks on the foot rim, and characteristic underglaze cobalt blue paired with iron red enamels. Earlier export wares often feature fluted bodies, panelled decorations, and traditional motifs such as foo dogs or shishi lion finials.

A pair of Imari vases can be arranged symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table to add color and structural balance. Their contrasting blue and orange palette complements both neutral minimal settings and traditional patterned schemes.

Clean Imari porcelain using a soft, dry cloth or a lightly dampened microfibre cloth with lukewarm water. Avoid chemical detergents, abrasive scrubbers, and immersion in hot water, as overglaze enamels and gilding can wear away over time.
