A matching pair of nineteenth-century Japanese Imari porcelain vases, each presenting an outswept trumpet rim over an elongated baluster body that falls to a raised and recessed foot rim. The pieces are decorated in a palette of cobalt blue, iron-red, green, and white enamel, with gilded highlights and hand-painted floral panels, bird motifs, and intricate geometric patterns. The inner rim displays spreading flowers, while the outer rim shows arched flower-filled panels between blue and hatched borders. The main bodies depict exotic birds perched in the trees of an oriental garden alongside smaller panels of flowers against a lattice, finished with reeded arch decoration rising from the foot rims. Each vase measures 41 cm in height and 18.5 cm in diameter. These decorative items suit placement on a mantelpiece within an English Country House interior.

Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region of Japan and was exported to Europe via the port of Imari starting in the seventeenth century. Characterised by rich underglaze blue and overglaze enamel decoration, it gained significant popularity in Western households during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Imari ceramics are crafted from kaolin-rich porcelain clay fired at high temperatures. The production process involves painting initial designs in underglaze cobalt blue, applying a clear glaze, firing, and subsequently hand-painting enamel detail, predominantly iron red and green, before a lower-temperature enamel firing.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically exhibit minor hand-painted variations, subtle irregularities in the glaze, and unglazed foot rims showing natural age discolouration. Examination of the base often reveals characteristic stilt or spur marks from the kiln firing process.

Imari vases can be styled as a symmetrical pair on a mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard top. The strong contrast of cobalt blue and iron red creates an effective decorative accent when set against neutral walls or placed within balanced vignette displays.

Clean antique porcelain by gently wiping with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or lukewarm water with mild soap. Avoid abrasive sponges, harsh chemical cleaners, and immersion in hot water, as these can erode delicate overglaze enamels.
