Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1890s:
Mashrabiya turned bobbin panels: Syrian or Egyptian lattice work from the Aesthetic period.
Mother-of-pearl star inlay: hand-cut shell decoration popular in late Victorian imports.
Softened finish on the top rail: natural wear from many years of handling.
Carved Moorish arch aprons: typical joinery of Eastern furniture imported around 1890.

This Anglo-Moorish corner chair dates from around 1890 and follows the nineteenth-century taste for exotic revival furniture. Constructed from dark brown hardwood, the piece combines intricate Mashrabiya latticework panels, turned wooden spindles, and geometric carved decoration on the lower sections. The dark brown leather seat is secured with a row of solid brass studs along the edges, and the framework is further embellished with inset mother-of-pearl floral inlay. The wood displays a warm polished finish with visible grain patterns across the structural elements. Measuring 74 cm high, 45 cm wide, and 45 cm deep, this compact seat functions effectively in a hallway, dressing room, or study corner as a distinctive occasional seat. The joints remain solid and tight, and the timber shows no evidence of woodworm activity. The piece operates well in traditional or eclectic domestic settings where decorative woodwork and Moorish styling are desired.

Anglo-Moorish furniture from the late 19th century combines traditional Western cabinetmaking with North African and Middle Eastern architectural motifs. Features typically include geometric mother-of-pearl or bone inlays, intricate lattice panels known as Mashrabiya, and dark dense hardwoods.

These pieces were constructed primarily from hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, decorated with inlaid mother-of-pearl or bone floral and geometric patterns, and paired with leather or velvet upholstery fastened by brass studwork.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned spindle latticework, hand-cut geometric mother-of-pearl or bone inlays flush with the timber, period-correct joinery, and natural surface patination around high-wear areas.

Place the chair in an underutilised corner, entrance hall, or quiet reading area to serve as a textural accent piece. Its dark tones and detailed woodwork contrast effectively against light, neutral walls in modern minimalist or eclectic interiors.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to prevent dirt accumulation within the carved latticework. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to protect the leather upholstery and prevent wood shrinkage that could dislodge the inlay.
