Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Ebony stringing and spade feet: Sheraton revival design popular in the early twentieth century.
Marquetry leaf panels on the back spindles: typical fine cabinet-making of the 1920s.
Crisp spindle turnings and joinery: consistent with early twentieth-century workshop production.
Mellow honey tone to the satinwood: aged naturally over roughly a century.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of Sheraton Revival armchairs dates from 1920. Each satinwood frame displays honey gold tones, inlaid ebony stringing, and a waxed finish. The arched top backrests contain slim moulded spindles with inlaid marquetry details, positioned above double stretchers with pierced fretwork rails. Shaped open arms sit on swept supports. The padded seats carry a woven plaid tartan upholstery in pink, green, and white. Tapering square front legs feature ebony inlay on their outer faces and terminate in spade feet, while discolouration marks the lowest stretcher on one chair. Measuring 100.5 cm high, 54.5 cm wide, and 21 cm deep, these chairs function well as seating at a dining table, writing desk, or in a living room seating area. Their compact footprint and shaped arm supports allow easy placement in traditional English country house interiors.

Twentieth-century revival satinwood seating draws heavily on late eighteenth-century Neoclassical and Sheraton designs, characterised by light-coloured woods, delicate proportions, hand-painted or inlaid geometric motifs, and slender vertical splats.

These armchairs typically feature solid or veneered West Indian satinwood frames, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, boxwood or rosewood marquetry stringing, and drop-in or webbed upholstered seats.

Authenticity is indicated by natural age oxidation giving the wood a deep golden hue, hand-cut joinery inside the seat rails, fine-scale inlay detail, and characteristic tapered square legs often terminating in spade feet.

Satinwood armchairs work effectively as flanking accent seating beside a console table, positioned within a bay window, or incorporated into a contemporary bedroom suite to provide warm timber tones.

Keep satinwood furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber bleaching and movement, dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to maintain the surface finish.
