This Edwardian display cabinet dates from the early 20th century and takes the form of a freestanding countertop showcase constructed from solid oak, glass, and brass. The medium brown timber has a polished finish that emphasizes the natural wood grain, paired with clear glass panels on the top, front, and sides. The single side-hung door operates with a small brass ring pull mounted on the vertical stile, alongside visible working hinges. Inside, the dark fabric display base creates a deep black contrast against the surrounding glazing and the light oak framework. The cabinet measures 84 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, offering a compact footprint suited for placement atop a sideboard or a hallway console in a modern living space. Homeowners can use the enclosed compartment to display small collectibles, curated curiosities, or personal artifacts while keeping items protected behind glass.

In the early 20th century, countertop display cabinets were designed for retail environments such as haberdasheries, jewellers, and chemists. They secured merchandise under glass while presenting items clearly to customers at counter level.

These cabinets were typically built using solid hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, fitted with clear glass panels on multiple sides and finished with brass hardware or small ring pulls to facilitate door operation.

Authentic period examples often feature drawn glass with subtle imperfections, hand-cut joinery, aged brass fittings, and natural wear along the timber frame where high retail usage occurred.

A glazed countertop cabinet functions as a functional focal point on a sideboard, desk, or island, ideal for displaying collections, ceramics, jewellery, or historical objects in modern schemes.

Clean the glass panels using a lint-free cloth and mild glass cleaner, avoiding direct spray on surrounding wood. Wax the oak timber frame periodically with a beeswax polish to preserve the original finish.
