Description

A very decorative Dutch walnut and marquetry display cabinet dating from the 19th Cent.

It is of typical break front design with canted sides.

It is in what could be described as "country house" condition in that it is original and unrestored but does have a few knocks and marks. The marquetry is all there and the glass looks all to be original with the odd imperfections you would expect. Inside it has the original old faded velvet lining and original shaped shelves.

The door opens and closes ok but the lock is not operative.

Contents not included.

Free local delivery (50mls), national and international delivery arranged at cost.

Date of Manufacture

Cross Antiques has dated this Dutch Marquetry Display Cabinet to the 19th Century.

Dutch marquetry of the 19th century is characterized by intricate timber inlays depicting naturalistic floral motifs, foliate scrolls, birds, and classical urns. Craftsmen utilized contrasting light and dark wood veneers set into rich mahogany or walnut grounds to create detailed decorative surfaces.

These cabinets were constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak for the frame, paired with delicate fruitwood, boxwood, or dyed timber veneers for the decorative inlay. Glazed panels were fitted into slim timber glazing bars to allow maximum light into the interior.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut joinery, subtle variations in veneer thickness, and natural age-related shrinkage lines along the grain. The back panels and drawer linings typically show hand-sawn timber marks, while the brass escutcheons and hinges exhibit hand-hammered or hand-chased finishing.

A glazed wall cabinet provides a focal point when mounted above a sideboard or console table in a dining room or hallway. It pairs effectively with contemporary neutral backdrops, providing warmth and texture while serving as a secure display for fine porcelain or glassware.

Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent veneer lifting or timber cracking. Dust gentle surfaces with a dry microfiber cloth and nourish the wood periodically with a high-grade beeswax polish, taking care to avoid catching delicate inlay edges.
