Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Carved scroll stretcher and scrolled legs: 19th-century French revival cabinet work.
Hand-worked needlepoint tapestry seat and back: historicist textiles popular in the late 1800s.
Softened edges and worn polish on arm terminals: regular handling over many decades.
Turned baluster side stretchers: typical frame construction for late 19th-century armchairs.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French nineteenth-century open armchair uses walnut timber and wool tapestry upholstery, fixed with brass tacks along the borders. The wooden frame displays scrolled volute armrests, turned supports beneath the arms, and a scrolled apron with carved details connecting the front legs. The ochre brown tapestry covering the seat and back incorporates a multicolour floral pattern alongside mythical creatures. A small blemish appears on the front of the seat tapestry. The sturdy armchair stands on carved front feet and measures 119 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. Position this seating piece in a living room, study, or bedroom as a standalone accent chair or an occasional seat alongside a desk or side table. The traditional aesthetic integrates smoothly into classical interior schemes, while the open arm design and upholstered back provide practical seating support for daily use in domestic settings.

FAQs

A 19th-century French open armchair, often referred to as a fauteuil, features exposed wooden armrests and structural framing paired with padded upholstery on the seat and backrest. These chairs frequently draw inspiration from Louis XIV or Regence historical styles, incorporating scrolling carved walnut elements and tapestry textiles.

Traditional construction employed dense European hardwoods such as walnut or beech for the carved frame. Upholstery typically utilised hand-woven wool tapestry or needlepoint fabric secured over horsehair and webbed internal support.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-carved joinery details with subtle human variations, mortise-and-tenon frame connections, and natural surface patination along armrests. Original textiles demonstrate hand-stitched backing, soft natural dye fading, and historic upholstery methods.

Position the armchair as a standalone accent piece alongside minimalist modern furniture to generate visual contrast. Combining detailed woven textile patterns with neutral wall tones and simple architectural elements allows the historic timber craftsmanship to serve as a focal point.

Keep the chair away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent textile fading and wood drying. Vacuum the upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment and maintain the walnut frame with a high-grade beeswax polish applied using a lint-free cloth.
