Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Scandinavian country strong box displays a rustic farmhouse style, formed from pine wood with a bentwood construction and a domed lid. The exterior exhibits an original blue hand-painted finish that has taken on a faded appearance, alongside exposed white paint on the interior surfaces. The structure is encased in black wrought iron strapping, featuring vertical metal bands across the body and decorative strap work over the lid, complete with a central keyhole escutcheon plate. Signs of age and wear include expected losses to the metal work, surface marks to the woodwork, chips and fading to the blue paint, and an empty lock mechanism where the original lock has been removed. The box measures 28 cm high, 55.9 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. Placed on a sideboard top, this piece functions as a practical storage solution in a home today.

FAQs

A Scandinavian strong box is a reinforced wooden container traditionally used across Nordic countries to secure currency, legal documents, and personal valuables. These vessels often featured oval or rectangular forms with heavy iron hardware and painted finishes.

These boxes were primarily constructed from local softwoods such as pine or fir, shaped using bentwood techniques or sturdy joinery. They were reinforced with hand-forged wrought iron straps, hinges, and escutcheon plates, and finished with mineral-based milk paints.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-hammered ironwork with natural oxidisation, uneven wood grain from hand-planing, and genuine paint wear around high-touch areas like handles and keyholes. Modern reproductions usually lack these signs of age and manual craftsmanship.

An antique strong box serves as a functional decorative object when placed on a sideboard, coffee table, or deep window sill. Its textured surface and historic metalwork contrast effectively against minimalist or modern Scandinavian interior schemes.

Dust the item regularly using a soft, dry cloth and avoid applying liquid cleaners or chemical polish that could strip original paint layers. Keep the piece in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and paint flaking.
