Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

An overmantel mirror is a large decorative looking glass designed specifically to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace, becoming particularly popular during the 19th century to amplify light and reflect interior spaces.

These pieces typically feature a hand-carved wooden frame coated in layers of gessoa chalk-based plaster mixturewhich was then water-gilded or oil-gilded with thin sheets of metallic leaf.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the reverse for hand-sawn wooden boards, examining the silvering on the glass for natural foxing and oxidation, and checking the gesso for micro-cracking and hand-tooled detailing consistent with period craftsmanship.

Placing a large gilded mirror above a contemporary minimalist fireplace creates a striking juxtaposition, bouncing natural light around the room and anchoring modern furnishings with historic texture.

Preservation requires keeping the mirror away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity, dusting gently with a dry, soft brush, and avoiding chemical cleaning solutions that can strip the delicate gilded surface.
