Description

Trollope & Sons Grafton Style Armchair.

Trollope & Sons founded in 1778, were one of the largest prestige furniture makers during the 19th century, and participated at the Great Exhibitions in London & Paris.

In the shape and spec' of a Howard and sons Grafton.

C.1890

Width 77cm x Depth 105cm x Height 83cm, with a seat height of 43cm and a seat depth of 65cm.

Now sympathetically restored to its undergarments, most of which is original traditional upholstery of an unusually high standard with ivory coloured horse hair, fine linen hessian and what I believe is fustian a high quality fabric with unusually deep and fur like pile.

In my opinion this is the highest quality original traditional upholstery I have seen or known of..

We have another Trollope & Sons armchair available, please see the images.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian armchairs from makers like Trollope and Sons typically feature deep, sprung upholstery designed for comfort, robust wooden frames, and often distinctive rolled arms or turned legs on castors.

These chairs were traditionally built using sturdy hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or beech for the internal frames, stuffed with natural fibres like horsehair, wool, and coir, and supported by coil springs.

Authenticity is identified through traditional joinery techniques, hand-tied coil springs, aged timber patination, and sometimes maker stamps or numbering on the wooden rails or castors.

Pairing a traditional Victorian armchair with modern, minimalist furniture creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic, allowing the historic craftsmanship and tactile fabric to serve as a focal point.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming with a low-suction attachment, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fabric degradation, and consulting professional conservators for frame or textile repairs.
