Late 19th-century French mirrors frequently feature carved wooden frames finished with gold leaf or gilt gesso, often displaying classical architectural motifs and arched tops designed to reflect light in formal reception rooms.

Authentic period pieces are typically constructed using a hand-carved wooden or composition frame layered with gesso and gold leaf over a pine or hardwood base, housing hand-silvered glass plates with bevelled edges.

Authenticity is assessed through the presence of oxidisation and foxing on the mercury or silver backing, hand-cut joinery on the reverse timber frame, and the subtle irregularities characteristic of hand-applied gilding.

Placing an ornate gilt mirror against a minimalist, neutral wall creates a striking focal point, balancing contemporary clean lines with historic texture and warm metallic tones.

Gilded frames require gentle dusting with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners, harsh chemicals, or direct sunlight to prevent the degradation of the delicate gold leaf.
