Overmantel mirrors gained prominence during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, specifically designed to be hung or placed directly above a fireplace mantelpiece to reflect light and enhance the sense of space within a room.

These mirrors typically feature a carved wooden frame, often pine or hardwood, coated in layers of gessoa mixture of plaster of Paris and gluewhich was then hand-carved and gilded with gold leaf or painted.

Authentic pieces often display signs of age such as foxing and oxidisation on the original mercury or silvered glass plate, hand-applied gesso shrinkage cracks, and traditional joinery or backboards consistent with the period.

An antique gilt mirror can serve as a striking focal point by contrasting its ornate, traditional craftsmanship with clean-walled contemporary spaces, or by placing it traditionally above a fireplace mantel.

To preserve gilded surfaces and antique glass, clean frames gently with a dry, soft brush to remove dust, avoid chemical solvents, and keep the mirror away from direct sources of excessive moisture and heat.
