This Victorian glove box dates to 1860 and takes a rectangular form in warm brown burr walnut with a slightly domed lid. The timber exhibits prominent natural grain patterns, complemented by polished brass mounts, decorative strapwork, rivet detailing, and an ornate keyhole escutcheon on the front. Original engraved brass mounts sit on the top and sides of the lid, securing the hinged closure which opens to an internal storage compartment. Measuring 6 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 9 cm deep, the box is a practical piece for modern interior styling. It functions well placed on a sideboard top, dressing table, or entryway console as a decorative storage container for small accessories and keepsakes.

During the Victorian era, gloves were an essential social accessory worn outdoors by both ladies and gentlemen. Specialty long wooden boxes were created specifically to hold flat leather or silk gloves, preventing them from creasing or losing their shape when stored.

Victorian craftsmen favoured figured timber veneers such as burr walnut, rosewood, and mahogany. These were often decorated with applied brass, bone, mother-of-pearl, or ivory strapwork, along with steel lock mechanisms and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces display distinct hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass escutcheons fastened with period screws or rivets, and natural patina on both the brass and the burr walnut veneer, showing gentle oxidisation and light wear consistent with age.

Place the box as an accent object on a console table, sideboard, or mantelpiece alongside modern ceramic items or framed art to create visual contrast. It also serves functional storage purposes on an office desk or nightstand.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or cracking. Clean the wood surface gently with a microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly; avoid abrasive polish on the aged brass elements to preserve the historical patina.
