Originating in France during the late 18th century, the cheval mirrornamed after the French word for horse, referencing its supportive four-legged framewas designed as a full-length dressing glass that allowed individuals to view their entire outfit.

Authentic period pieces are typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, featuring tenon joinery, hand-turned uprights, brass pivot hardware, and mercury-silvered or early silver-nitrate mirror plates.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-cut wood screws, the presence of old-growth timber grain, foxing or oxidisation on the original glass plate, and traditional hand-forged brass mechanisms rather than modern machine-made fittings.

Such mirrors serve as functional focal points in modern bedrooms or dressing rooms, contrasting cleanly against minimalist white walls or complementing rich textural elements like velvet and wool.

Preservation requires keeping the timber conditioned with appropriate wax, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent wood fading, and cleaning the mirror plate gently with a lint-free cloth without allowing moisture to seep behind the glass edges.
