Drapers mirrors were originally utilised in nineteenth and early twentieth-century retail establishments for customers to view garments. They are characterised by their tall, slender proportions and often feature split-plate glass construction due to historical manufacturing limitations in glass sizing.

These frames are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as pine or mahogany, which are then stained, painted, or chemically treated to mimic the appearance of expensive ebony wood.

Authenticity is determined by examining the backing boards, fixings, and the nature of the glass plate. Split-plate mirrors feature a horizontal join where two separate pieces of glass meet, often displaying characteristic foxing, silvering degradation, and hand-bevelled edges consistent with early fabrication techniques.

Such pieces function effectively as focal points when positioned leaning against a wall in hallways, bedrooms, or living spaces, adding verticality and reflecting natural light while grounding the room with historic character.

Conservation involves using a soft, lint-free cloth with a mild, ammonia-free cleaning solution applied to the cloth rather than directly to the glass, taking care to avoid abrasive materials that might damage the aged silvering or the ebonised finish.
