19th century
Sold 30 October 2025 · Tom Scott Antiques
This “19th Century Howard Style Armchair” found a buyer.

It was listed by Tom Scott Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

Very comfortable 19th century Howard & Sons style reading or library armchair.

Super quality frame and turned mahogany legs with castors to the front. This is an armchair you will happily use all evening, or afternoon!

The current upholstery is vintage, so you can see there are areas of wear and sun bleaching, so this would be a good choice of armchair to use whilst you consider samples for reupholstery.

The interior of the seat springs and webbing etc are all good, so it would just be a re cover in your fabric…you would need around 5m to 6m of fabric.

The chair is offered as you see it here, hence the low price for this style and quality of armchair.

Measuring:

Height 35" / 89cm

Width 30" / 76cm

Depth 40" / 102cm

The Howard style originated in the 19th century, popularised by the renowned London firm Howard & Sons, known for introducing exceptionally comfortable, deeply sprung lounge seating.

Authentic pieces typically feature a sturdy beechwood frame, hand-tied coil spring systems, horsehair stuffing, and traditional hessian and webbing upholstery.

Authentic pieces often exhibit stamped brass castors, makers marks on the back legs, traditional hand-stitched detailing, and specific proportions characteristic of Victorian manufacturing.

This versatile seating option pairs effectively with both minimalist modern aesthetics and traditional schemes, often used as a reading chair or balanced against clean architectural lines.

Preservation involves regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment, keeping the piece out of direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, and professional cleaning for the textiles.
