The Sussex chair design was inspired by traditional country rush-seated chairs found in cottages and pubs, and was popularised by Morris & Co. during the Arts and Crafts movement in the late 19th century.

Authentic chairs from this design tradition are typically constructed from turned hardwoods such as beech, ash, or fruitwood, featuring woven rush or seagrass seats.

Identification involves examining the craftsmanship of the turnery, the tightness and material of the rush weave, and looking for maker marks or stamps often found on the underside of the seat rails.

These chairs add organic texture and historical contrast to modern dining spaces, pairing well with both minimalist modern tables and rustic timber surfaces.

Rush seats should be kept away from excessive moisture and direct sunlight to prevent the natural fibres from becoming brittle, and cleaned gently with a dry soft brush.
