Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Hand-carved reverse with gouge marks: workshop woodcarving before widespread machine reproduction.
Yellow ochre wash across the back timber: Italian gilder's workshop practice.
Darkened toning settled into the leaf carving: accumulated age in the hollows.
Soft rubbing on the raised rope-twist moulding: decades of dusting and handling.

This 1880 antique Venetian wall mirror in the Florentine style is formed from a hand-carved giltwood and gesso frame holding a clear glass plate. The gilded finish displays an authentic aged patina with visible rubbing, complemented by dark shading within the recesses and details. The decorative framework includes prominent openwork scrollwork, dense acanthus leaf carving along the outer edges, and a distinctive rope-twist inner moulding encircling the rectangular glass. It measures 46 cm high by 40 cm wide. Suitable for hanging either horizontally or vertically, this piece functions well as an accent wall mirror in a hallway, bedroom or living area, and sits effectively above a mantelpiece. The ornate gilded design integrates easily into period or classic interior schemes, bringing reflective light and traditional craftsmanship to domestic spaces.

FAQs

Florentine mirrors originate from Florence, Italy, and are distinguished by intricately carved wooden frames, often featuring acanthus leaves, open scrollwork, and gold leaf gilding.

Traditional pieces were hand-carved from solid timber, coated with gesso plaster layers, and finished with thin sheets of gold leaf applied over a bole clay substrate.

Authentic examples display hand-carved wood grain and tool marks rather than moulded resin or plaster, accompanied by light gilding wear and historic timber joinery on the back.

Positioning a Florentine giltwood mirror above a contemporary console table or fireplace creates a balanced textural contrast between ornate historic craftsmanship and clean modern lines.

Dust the carved ornament gently with a soft dry camel hair brush or feather duster, avoiding water, spray cleaners, and liquid polishes that can strip delicate water gilding.
