19th-century Anglo-dutch Revival Fretwork Wall Mirror

19th century
For Sale by Beau Nash Bath
Description

This handsome 19th-century Queen Anne Revival wall mirror perfectly captures the rich cross-pollination of the Anglo-Dutch style, a design movement born when Dutch prince William of Orange ascended the British throne alongside Queen Mary in 1689. Dutch craftsmen arriving in London revolutionized English cabinetmaking, bringing with them a passion for figured walnut—the defining timber of Queen Anne’s reign—and the intricate art of floral marquetry. The mirror’s flowing S-scroll silhouette, arching cresting, and gilded inner slip embody quintessential English Queen Anne elegance, while the exquisite inlaid urn of blooming flora set into the rich walnut grain directly honors the Golden Age Dutch obsession with botanical art and horticulture

This nineteenth-century wall mirror follows the Georgian style with an Anglo-Dutch revival fretwork design. The wooden frame uses walnut veneer in a warm brown colour, complemented by a shaped apron and scrolled cresting decorated with hand-painted floral motifs. The timber shows visible grain patterns and light surface variations along the edges of the carved silhouette. The mirror measures 70.5 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. Suitable for domestic settings in an English country house style, this piece hangs directly above a sideboard in a dining room, hallway, or living area. The vertical proportions allow it to mount securely on standard wall spaces while reflecting light into the surrounding interior.

Georgian walnut mirrors are typically characterised by symmetrical fretwork frames, architectural crestings, and elegant scrolled aprons popular throughout eighteenth-century Britain. Frames were constructed using walnut veneers over pine or oak substrates to showcase rich, figured wood grain.

These mirrors were primarily constructed using native softwoods or hardwoods like pine or oak, overlaid with cut walnut veneers. The glass panels were historically hand-blown plate glass, silvered using tin amalgam and mercury backing.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved joinery on the frame reverse, oxidized timber backboards, and gentle distress or greyish spots (foxing) within the original silvered mirror plate. Veneer lifting, historic repair lines, and natural shrinkage cracks in the timber backing also indicate appropriate age.

Positioning a Georgian mirror above a minimalist console table or fireplace mantel creates an effective historical focal point. The dark walnut tone contrasts well against modern neutral paint schemes, plaster walls, or contemporary wallpaper designs.

Dust the timber frame regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to preserve the veneer patina. Avoid applying liquid glass cleaners directly to the mirror to prevent fluid from seeping behind the frame and damaging the silvering or wood backing.
