Description

Antique Venetian Cheval Mirror with Carved Giltwood Frame.

A beautiful antique cheval (or dressing) mirror featuring a richly aged glass with slight foxing, set within a rectangular giltwood frame topped by an ornate floral crest. The angle of the mirror is adjustable via its original thumb screws, adding both charm and functionality.

The piece is supported by a period lyre-shaped giltwood and gesso show frame, with elegant sabre-shaped uprights adorned with scrolling foliage. A central cross stretcher joins the uprights and features an attractive scallop shell motif at its centre.

The base is skilfully carved with four mythical dolphin-shaped legs, each terminating in brass castors.

A stunning and highly decorative mirror that remains functional and full of character.

Cheval mirrors originated in France during the late 18th century. The term cheval derives from the French word for horse, referring to the four-legged frame structure that supported the swivelling glass.

Authentic period pieces typically feature hand-carved softwoods or hardwoods finished with water gilding over gesso. The glass is often silvered by hand, resulting in characteristic foxing and minor oxidisation over time.

Authentic antique mirrors display hand-carved detailing with tool marks, older mirror plates with distortion or foxing, and traditional joinery methods on the reverse stand rather than modern fixings.

Such ornate pieces serve as striking focal points in minimalist rooms, contrasting clean modern lines with historic craftsmanship. They work effectively placed in bedrooms, dressing areas, or hallways to reflect light.

Keep gilded items away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent the gesso from cracking and the leaf from flaking. Dust gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid chemical glass cleaners that may seep behind the frame.
