Description

A particularly good quality Victorian low bedroom chair with a sculptural walnut frame, the arched back featuring a carved crest with scroll and floral detailing. Upholstered in a plush olive-green fabric, the chair stands on fine turned and fluted front legs with original brass castors.

A quietly confident piece with an inviting, informal presence. The open, armless design and low stance make it especially well suited to relaxed settings such as reading corners, dressing areas or guest rooms.

Presented in very good antique condition, the walnut surfaces with only some light age-related surface wear and polished to a warm tone. The upholstery is clean and comfortable with only very minor wear and marks. Structurally sound, beautifully clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1870.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian bedroom chairs, often referred to as nursing chairs, were typically designed with low profiles to accommodate the voluminous petticoats and dresses worn by women during the mid-to-late 19th century, making them easier to dress in.

These chairs were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, featuring traditionally sprung seats, horsehair stuffing, and upholstered finishes in silk, damask, or velvet.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-carved wooden frames, traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon, handmade brass castors, and aged patina on the timber surfaces consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing.

An antique low chair works effectively when contrasted against contemporary minimalist furniture, serving as an accent piece in a corner or alongside a fireplace to introduce historical texture and character.

Preservation involves keeping the timber nourished with appropriate furniture wax, protecting delicate upholstery fabrics from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and avoiding excessive moisture.
