This Victorian Wellington chest dates from 1890 and is made from mahogany with a rich brown colour, glass, and brass hardware. The tall furniture piece stands at 185 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 45 cm deep, providing substantial vertical storage while maintaining a compact footprint on the floor. Seven graduated drawers feature ornate brass drop handles and decorative carved motifs along the top border, while the base rests upon shaped bracket feet. A central locking mechanism secures the upper structure, which includes a glazed cabinet door with diamond pane patterns, flanked by small side shelves and a mirrored alcove beneath a pediment topped with a turned finial. Positioned in a bedroom, dressing room, or living space, this upright chest functions practically for storing folded garments, accessories, or collectibles. The upper glazed display section and mirrored back offer an integrated space to showcase decorative items or glassware. Maintenance involves standard dusting of the polished timber surfaces and careful cleaning of the glass panes and brass fittings using appropriate domestic care products.

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow chest of drawers originally named after the First Duke of Wellington following his victory at Waterloo. Popularised during the 19th century, these pieces typically feature a column of seven drawers secured by a hinged vertical locking flap down one side.

Victorian Wellington chests were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany, walnut, or oak, often finished with flame mahogany veneers. Drawer linings were commonly crafted from pine or oak, fitted with hand-cut dovetail joints and brass drop or knob handles.

Authentic period examples feature hand-dovetailed drawer construction, original brass lock mechanisms, and a functional side locking bar. Look for natural ageing on the timber interior, original glass in glazed sections, and evidence of hand-carved mouldings.

Due to its tall, compact footprint, a Wellington chest works well in narrow hallways, home offices, or alcoves. Positioning the piece alongside understated contemporary soft furnishings allows the rich mahogany timber and detailed silhouette to serve as an anchor point.

Maintain the timber finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a quality beeswax polish twice a year. Keep the chest away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the timber from splitting or the original polish from fading.
