This tall, narrow mahogany Wellington chest dates from the 1920 period in a Victorian style, finished in a warm brown colour. The piece comprises six drawers in total, configured as five graduated drawers beneath a top drawer, alongside a hinged locking side bar fitted with a working lock and a blue tasselled key. Additional visible details include ornate brass drop handles on each drawer front, flat panelled sides, and a sturdy plinth base. The dimensions measure 114 cm high by 53 cm wide and 33 cm deep, providing a compact storage solution. Suitable for placement in a gentleman's library or a home study, the cabinet brings traditional character to an interior. The timber displays natural grain variations and a few signs of wear commensurate with its age and office-style history. The deep internal compartments accommodate various organisational needs while maintaining a slender footprint against a wall. The secure locking mechanism keeps contents safely enclosed when not in use.

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow suite of drawers named after the First Duke of Wellington following his victory at Waterloo. Characterised by a hinged vertical flange or stile along one side that locks all drawers simultaneously, it was designed as compact military campaign and office furniture during the 19th century.

These chests are predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or pine with mahogany veneers, incorporating solid oak or pine drawer linings. Key construction markers include hand-cut dovetail joints, brass swan-neck or drop handles, and a continuous plinth base.

Authentic pieces feature a functioning hinged side flap with a brass keyhole mechanism designed to secure all drawer fronts at once. Look for hand-cut dovetails on the drawer side panels, original cast brass handles, and subtle shrinkage lines in the timber veneer consistent with historical aging.

Due to its vertical proportion and narrow footprint, a Wellington chest suits compact spaces such as hallway nooks, alcoves, or dressing rooms. The top surface provides an ideal display plinth for single decorative ceramic pieces or framed artwork.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and applying a beeswax polish twice annually following the direction of the grain. Avoid placing solid timber furniture directly adjacent to central heating radiators or in direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and finish drying.
