Antique Victorian Mahogany Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

A wonderful antique mahogany chest of drawers. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1890’s period.

It is of outstanding quality, it is very well built and it is a useful size, with lots of storage space inside the generous drawers. There are lovely brass handles, this sits on bracket feet with a beautifully shaped lower edge.

The mahogany has a gorgeous colour tone and patina, we have just had this re-polished, the condition is great for its age. There are some small marks and indentations beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian chests of drawers were produced during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901) and are characterized by robust wood construction, functional storage layouts, and decorative features such as turned legs, carved aprons, or ornamental brass hardware.

Primary woods included mahogany, walnut, oak, and pine, often finished with rich stains. Secondary woods like pine or deal were used for internal drawer linings, joined with hand-cut dovetails and fitted with cast or stamped brass handles.

Look for hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer edges, uneven backboards showing hand-planing marks, period-appropriate drawer runners showing natural friction wear, and original brass drawer pulls or lock plates.

Position the piece as a focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living area. Balance the dark timber by styling the top surface with modern ceramic vases, contemporary artwork, or minimalist table lamps.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the wood grain. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent wood shrinkage or cracking.
