Figured walnut gained immense popularity during the Victorian period due to its rich, swirling grain patterns and luxurious appearance, often utilised by master cabinetmakers for high-end decorative objects and veneer work.

These pieces typically feature solid secondary woods with decorative hardwood veneers applied to the exterior, complemented by dovetail joinery, brass hardware, and traditional hand-polished finishes.

Authentic items often exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, genuine patina on the timber, aged brass escutcheons, and traditional hand-applied French polish rather than modern synthetic lacquers.

Placing an antique wooden box on a modern surface such as a marble mantelpiece, minimalist sideboard, or open bookshelf adds tactile warmth, historical contrast, and sophisticated textural layering to contemporary spaces.

Preserve the wood by keeping the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and occasionally apply microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the antique finish.
