Description

We have been fortunate to get hold of some truly stunning 19th century Italian frames that we have added nice quality mirror plate too. These make incredible features on any wall in a great number of interiors. The design is arguably quite contemporary which is why I love this particular design of frame. The moulding is incredibly fine and when I spoke to my restorer about these he informed me just how hard it is to make this moulding so it really is a testament to the crafts people of the time that created these.

This example is stunning with a great amount of detail in the frame with nice depth. The faux tortoiseshell is also a beautiful feature that contrasts with the ebonised frame perfectly.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

This style involves staining wood to resemble ebony, often contrasted with faux tortoiseshell finishes achieved through specialised paint techniques or applied veneers, mimicking luxury materials popular during the period.

Frames were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like pearwood or pine, which accepted dark ebonisation stains well, paired with hand-blown sheet glass or early float glass variants.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-applied finishes showing natural ageing, and older mercury or silvered mirror plates with characteristic oxidisation spots at the edges.

The dark, dramatic frame serves as a striking focal point; hang it against neutral walls to highlight the textural contrast, or position it above a minimalist console table to anchor the space.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and high humidity fluctuations to protect the wood and silvering. Clean the glass gently with a soft microfibre cloth and avoid spraying liquids directly onto the frame or backing.
