Named after the painter Thomas Gainsborough who frequently depicted similar seating, this chair style features a wide, upholstered seat and back with open padded arms, popular during the mid-to-late 18th century.

These chairs are typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany, featuring mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved details, and traditional horsehair or webbing upholstery foundations.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-cut joinery, timber ageing characteristics, hand-forged fixings, and historical upholstery techniques beneath modern fabric layers.

Pair this piece with minimalist contemporary furnishings to create a striking contrast, allowing the traditional craftsmanship and textile pattern to act as a focal point.

Keep the wood conditioned with appropriate microcrystalline wax and protect the fabric from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent fibre degradation and fading.
