Slipper chairs originated in the 18th century and became popular during the Victorian era. They are characterised by their low-set frame, which was originally designed to allow ladies to sit comfortably while dressing or wearing cumbersome historical garments.

Authentic period chairs typically feature a sturdy hardwood frame, traditionally made from mahogany, walnut, or beech. They utilise traditional coil springing, horsehair stuffing, and hand-tufted buttoning upholstered in textiles such as velvet, damask, or wool.

Authentication involves inspecting the frame construction, joinery, and fixings for period-appropriate hand-cut screws or traditional joints. Makers marks, stamps, or stamps on castors, such as those by Gillows, also assist in verification.

The low profile of a slipper chair makes it versatile for contemporary spaces. It works well as a bedroom accent piece, beside a fireplace, or paired with a modern sofa to introduce historic texture and a compact seating option.

Preservation requires keeping the piece out of direct sunlight to prevent textile fading and fabric degradation. Regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment and professional cleaning help maintain the integrity of historic upholstery.
