Description

A stunning pair of antique Victorian Papier Mache chairs, inlaid with abalone. They were made in England, they date from the 1860-1880 period.

They are beautifully made and are of very fine quality, with exquisite details. They have typical Victorian spoon backs and sit on cabriole legs. They are a matched pair with some differences in design, but are essentially the same size and were almost certainly made together.

They would have originally had caned seats which have been upholstered over long ago, the vintage fabric presents well but has some wear and tear. The chairs are very delicate by nature due to the material used, they can be sat on but with extreme care, they are more for decorative purpose. There are some small cracks and gaps here and there, one chair has an antique timber reinforcement on the back.

Victorian papier-mache furniture gained immense popularity during the 19th century, particularly in centres like Birmingham and Wolverhampton, where manufacturers developed techniques to press paper pulp, glue, and resin into iron moulds to create remarkably durable structural items.

These pieces are constructed from layered paper pulp mixed with resin and linseed oil, pressed under high pressure, then baked and treated to create a rigid substrate. They are typically finished with multiple layers of black japan lacquer, hand-painted gilt decoration, and inlaid mother-of-pearl.

Authentic items feature substantial weight despite being made of paper pulp, hand-cut mother-of-pearl inlay embedded flush with the lacquer surface, and traditional hand-painted gilding that shows signs of age-related craquelure and oxidisation.

These ornate chairs function exceptionally well as occasional seating or decorative accent pieces in contemporary spaces, providing a striking contrast when paired with minimalist architecture or serving as a focal point in a neutral room.

Preservation requires keeping the items away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent the lacquer from cracking or crazing. Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid all chemical cleaning agents, waxes, or moisture.
