FAQs

Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, developing from traditional vernacular woodworking techniques where staves and spindles are wedged directly into a solid sculpted seat.

Authentic pieces typically feature a combination of native timbers, frequently utilising elm or ash for the sculpted seats to prevent splitting, alongside beech or birch for turned spindles and legs.

Authenticity is assessed by examining tool marks on the underside of the seat, the use of wedged through-tenon joints, hand-turned components with minor irregularities, and the presence of natural oxidisation and patina.

They pair effectively with contemporary minimalist dining tables to introduce textural contrast, warmth, and historical depth into a contemporary dining space.

Maintain the timber by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the wood surface.
