Dating primarily to the early 19th century during the English Regency period, these mirrors feature curved glass that provided servants with a wide-angle view of a dining room to monitor guests needs, while also serving a decorative function to reflect ambient light.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from a carved wooden or papier-mache core finished with layers of gesso, which is then gold leafed or gilt. They frequently incorporate ebonised reeded inner rings and applied composition ornaments.

Authentication relies on examining the construction of the backboards, the presence of old glass with slight distortions or foxing, the composition of the gesso layer, and hand-carved detailing rather than modern synthetic casting.

These mirrors act as focal points due to their reflective properties and ornate frames. They are frequently hung above a fireplace mantel, in an entryway, or paired with minimalist modern furnishings to create a striking historical contrast.

Conservation requires dusting gently with a soft, dry brush. Water and chemical cleaning agents must be strictly avoided to prevent moisture damage to the fragile water-gilding and historical gesso surfaces.
