These large Satsuma vases belong to the Meiji period around 1900 and take a baluster shape with flared necks and patterned cream crackle-glaze earthenware bodies. The detailed hand-painted decoration displays figural scenes in polychrome enamels with extensive gilt trim, using vibrant shades of green, purple, brown, blue, yellow, and red across the surface, alongside intricate patterned borders around the shoulders and neck. Each vase measures 37 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 23 cm deep, presenting a substantial presence for display. In a contemporary home, this pair suits placement on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or console table as a decorative focal point in a living room, dining room, or hallway. The maximalist style integrates well into traditional or eclectic interiors where the richly coloured figural scenes and textured glaze add visual depth and traditional Japanese craftsmanship to the scheme.

Satsuma pottery is a style of Japanese earthenware that originated in the Satsuma province during the late sixteenth century. Exported heavily to the West during the Meiji period, it is recognized by its light cream glaze, fine crackle, and intricate enamelled and gilded decorations.

Satsuma wares are constructed from a low-fired earthenware body with a cream lead glaze. Decorative elements feature thick polychrome enamels and gold leaf trim applied during secondary kiln firings.

Authentic pieces generally display a warm cream ground covered in a uniform micro-crackle glaze. Look for finely painted figures with detailed expressions, multi-layered gilding, and maker marks or character signatures on the base.

Arrange a pair symmetrically on a dark wood sideboard, console, or mantelpiece to create visual balance. The warm cream tones and detailed colour palette contrast effectively against modern neutral backdrops.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry brush. Avoid immersing earthenware in water or using abrasive cleaners, as moisture can enter crackle glazes and cause damage to gilt or enamelled surfaces.
