Kyoto Satsuma Moriage Chrysanthemum Vases, Chikusai Style, C.1890

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A matched pair of Meiji-period Kyoto Satsuma earthenware vases, circa 1890. They are made in the Kinkōzan tradition and in the style of Chikusai, with balanced baluster bodies, flared rims and a fine cream-coloured crackle glaze.

Each vase is painted with chrysanthemums and small birds, then developed with extensive raised polychrome enamel moriage. The white and iron-red dots covering the background form a jewelled-dot moriage pattern, applied individually to create a fine tactile surface. Raised bands around the narrow necks and footrings combine cobalt-blue, gilt and polychrome enamel with geometric textile motifs, stylised clouds and medallions.

The pair belongs to the refined Meiji-period Kyō-Satsuma tradition, valued for controlled enamel painting and skilled relief decoration. The hand-painted details vary slightly between the two vases, confirming their individual execution.

Dimensions

Height: 30 cm and 30.5 cm; Diameter: 13.7 cm and 14 cm; Weight: 1,010 g and 1,050 g

Condition

Both vases are in very good original condition. The interior of the neck of each vase has an old cosmetic paint coating, with a single fine crack visible in the coating. UV examination confirms that both necks and bodies are structurally sound, with no underlying cracks, repairs or repainting elsewhere. The coating appears to have been applied for cosmetic reasons rather than to conceal damage or restoration.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Kyoto Satsuma moriage refers to Japanese earthenware produced during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, characteristically decorated with raised slip trailing (moriage) and detailed polychrome enamels over a cream crackle glaze.

These pieces are crafted from soft-paste earthenware, coated in a fine ivory-toned crackle glaze, and layered with pigmented liquid clay slip and overglaze enamel paint to form raised textural patterns.

Authentic pieces feature fine, uniform crackle glazing, complex hand-painted enamel decoration, precise raised slip work, and frequently carry painted or impressed maker marks on the base.

Positioning a symmetrical pair of Satsuma vases on a sideboard, console table, or fireplace mantel introduces warm neutral background tones, intricate surface texture, and historical decorative focus to a room.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or dry brush. Avoid immersing earthenware in water or using harsh cleaning agents, as liquid can penetrate the porous crackle glaze and damage delicate overglaze enamels.
