Satsuma pottery is a style of Japanese earthenware that originated in Satsuma province during the sixteenth century and was widely produced for export during the Meiji period. It is characterised by a cream-coloured crackle glaze paired with detailed hand-painted enamels depicting landscapes, floral patterns, or figures.

Satsuma vessels are constructed from a low-fired ceramic earthenware body coated in a transparent crackle glaze. Artisans applied polychrome enamels, gilding, and raised relief decoration called moriage to create textured, dimensional patterns across the exterior surface.

Authentic items feature a soft cream ceramic body covered in fine surface crackle, combined with raised enamel work and detailed painted decoration. Many pieces display maker marks, signatures, or the Shimazu family crest on the base or lower side of the vessel.
