FAQs

A captains chair is a low-backed wooden armchair featuring a curved backrest supported by spindles, traditionally used in studies, offices, and libraries during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

These chairs were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, elm, or mahogany, selected for their durability and strength in commercial and domestic office environments.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-turned spindles, a saddle-shaped solid wood seat, and natural patination consistent with age and use.

Pairing a traditional wooden armchair with a minimalist contemporary desk creates a balanced contrast, adding warmth, texture, and historical character to a workspace.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
