The bergere armchair originated in France during the early 18th century, transitioning from formal high-backed chairs to a more enclosed, comfortable seating option characterised by upholstered panels set into a wooden frame.

Traditional bergere chairs feature a solid hardwood frame, most commonly beech or walnut, combined with intricately hand-woven cane panels on the back and sides, often supplemented by loose feather or down-filled seat cushions.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon, hand-carved wooden details without modern machine marks, hand-woven caning with natural irregularities, and signs of age-related patina on the wood finish.

This seating piece functions effectively as a statement armchair in a living room or study, contrasting against minimalist modern furniture or complementing traditional decor through its classic wooden frame and textured upholstery.

Preservation requires keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood and cane from drying out and snapping, alongside regular gentle dusting and occasional moistening of the cane to maintain elasticity.
