Patch boxes were small, portable containers used in the eighteenth century to store small pieces of fabric or silk, known as patches, which fashionable individuals applied to the face to conceal blemishes or display social status.

These boxes were typically crafted using base or precious metals such as white metal, silver, or pinchbeck, frequently paired with organic materials like tortoiseshell, horn, or ivory, and often lined with tortoiseshell.

Authentication involves examining the hand-cut construction, natural patination of the tortoiseshell, hand-engraved metal details, and period-appropriate hinges and closures rather than modern machine stamping.

An antique patch box can be displayed as a focal point on a dressing table, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or styled atop a stack of art books on a coffee table to add a touch of historical texture.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent the tortoiseshell from warping or cracking, and cleaning only with a soft, dry cloth without harsh chemicals.
