FAQs

Victorian giltwood mirrors are characterised by their application of gold leaf or gilt paint over a carved wooden base, often featuring classical revival motifs, elaborate ornamentation, and substantial proportions typical of 19th-century craftsmanship.

These pieces typically utilise a hand-carved softwood or hardwood frame, prepared with layers of gesso and bole before being meticulously gilded with gold leaf. The glass is often hand-silvered and held within a tongue-and-groove or pinned backing.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as foxing or oxidisation on the mirror plate, hand-cut joinery, wear patterns on the gilt finish revealing the reddish bole beneath, and heavy timber backboards secured with period fixings.

A Victorian giltwood mirror can serve as a striking focal point when mounted above a contemporary fireplace or console table, contrasting ornate historical craftsmanship with minimalist modern furnishings to add depth and reflected light.

Dust the frame gently with a dry, soft brush and avoid using water, chemical solvents, or commercial polishes, which can strip or damage the delicate gold leaf layer. Protect the mirror from direct sunlight and excessive humidity.
