FAQs

Shoe-shaped snuff boxes gained popularity in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries as novelty items reflecting contemporary footwear fashions, often carved from wood, bone, or ivory.

Makers utilised a variety of materials including hardwoods like boxwood and fruitwood, horn, tortoiseshell, papier-mache, and precious metals for hinges and mounts.

Authenticity is determined by evaluating tool marks, natural patina, wear patterns consistent with age, the construction of the sliding or hinged lid, and the type of joinery used.

These miniature objects work well displayed on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or coffee table as a focal point of curiosity, often paired with books or trays to create curated vignettes.

Preservation requires maintaining stable humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the dry wood surface.
