Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early 1900s overmantel mirror stands in the Georgian style and measures 77 cm high, 143 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. The construction uses pine, mirror glass, paint, and gesso finished in a cream colour. The wide frame incorporates three glass panels arranged as a triptych, flanked by fluted pilasters on either side. At the top, an ornate frieze displays a central carved urn motif surrounded by intricate foliage swags, beneath a projecting cornice with small spherical moulding details. The plate glass shows visible age marks, adding character to the piece. Suitable for placement above a fireplace mantel in a reception room or living area, this mirror brings a traditional neoclassical aesthetic to contemporary interiors.

FAQs

An overmantel mirror is a wide architectural wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these frames often incorporate neoclassical elements such as friezes, pilasters, and decorative mouldings to anchor a rooms focal point.

These mirrors were typically constructed from pine or lime wood frames covered with gesso and decorated with paint or gold leaf gilding. The mirror glass was often split into three panels, known as a triptych design, to manage manufacturing costs and structural weight.

Authentic period examples feature hand-carved or plaster gesso relief details, original pine backing boards, and hand-cast iron fixing brackets. Look for subtle foxing or silvering degradation on the mirror glass and multiple layers of historical paint or original surface gilding.

Position the mirror directly above a living room fireplace hearth or rest it on a wide dining room sideboard to reflect ambient light. Pairing a painted, architectural frame with modern neutral walls creates visual contrast and enhances room depth.

Dust the detailed carvings gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or clean microfibre duster. Avoid applying liquid cleaner directly onto the frame, and clean glass sections by spraying glass cleaner lightly onto a lint-free cloth first to protect the surrounding paintwork.
