Description

A superb early 18thc elm writing box....it still has the early iron "strap" hinges and period brass escutcheon and if you look inside, you can see all the splashes and leaks of the ink from plenty of use....it still retains the candlebox / till and has all the original period woodwork....one of the things I like most is the size and the beautiful colour elm goes with age....a wonderful patination and so original.

English. C1700-20.

FAQs

Writing boxes date back to the medieval period, evolving into portable desks used by literate individuals to store writing materials, ink, and important documents before fitted furniture became common.

These pieces were typically constructed from native hardwoods such as elm, oak, or walnut, utilising hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged construction, and simple brass or iron hardware.

Authentication relies on examining tool marks, hand-cut joinery, period-appropriate timber shrinkage, natural wax patination, and the integrity of historic hinges and escutcheons.

It can be placed on a console table, desk, or bookshelf to add texture, historical depth, and functional surface storage to a contemporary room.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the historic surface.
