FAQs

Venetian mirrors originated on the island of Murano near Venice during the Renaissance. Master glassmakers developed techniques to produce exceptionally clear glass and intricate, hand-etched designs mounted on wooden frames.

These mirrors typically feature hand-blown sheet glass or plate glass mounted on a wooden backing board. The decorative elements, such as crests and border panels, are secured with metal screws capped with decorative glass rosettes.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit hand-beveled edges, mercury or early silvering with characteristic oxidisation and spotting, hand-engraved floral motifs, and old wooden backing structures fixed with handmade screws.

A Venetian mirror functions effectively as a focal point in contemporary spaces, reflecting light to enlarge rooms. It contrasts well against minimalist, neutral-coloured walls or adds texture when paired with clean-lined modern furniture.

Maintenance requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid spraying liquids directly onto the glass or frame, as moisture can seep behind the silvering or damage the aged wooden backing.
