A Victorian dressing box is a portable compartmented case used during the 19th century to store cosmetics, grooming tools, jewellery, and personal care items for travel or boudoir use.

These boxes were typically constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, and were frequently fitted with velvet linings, cut-glass jars with silver-plated or sterling silver lids, and mother-of-pearl implements.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate joinery, brass hardware, hand-cut glass bottles, and natural ageing on the internal mirrors and textiles rather than modern synthetic adhesives or plastics.

An antique dressing box can be displayed open on a dressing table or chest of drawers to showcase its fitted interior, adding historical texture and practical storage to a modern bedroom or dressing room.

Preserve the timber by keeping the box away from direct sunlight and radiators, applying occasional microcrystalline wax to the wood, and gently dusting internal velvet and glass components with a dry, soft cloth.
