This “Unusual Early Ladder Back Arm Chair” found a buyer.

It was listed by Carse Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

Unusual early, almost definitely, 18th century large size ladder back arm chair in ash, driftwood and pine. Most of the chair is constructed from ash and bits of driftwood with the original pine seat. Slightly unusual design and quite primitive which makes me believe this is possible a Scottish northern isles chair. The condition is OK for its age but there is some minor old damage and it has lost some hight from the base. The chair is the most gorgeous colour with original patination and a waxed finish. Would look lovely in a large Georgian hallway or similar.

SIZE; 24" wide by 16" deep by 37" high overall. Seat height is 15 1/2"

CIRCA; Late 18th century.

ORIGIN; Possibly Scottish. Northern or Western Isles

Ladder back chairs feature horizontal slats or rungs between the vertical uprights of the backrest, a design that gained popularity in domestic interiors during the 17th and 18th centuries across Britain and Europe.

These chairs were typically constructed using native hardwoods such as oak, ash, elm, or fruitwood for the frame, often paired with rush, straw, or solid timber seats.

Authentication involves examining construction methods, tool marks, timber shrinkage, wear patterns, and traditional joinery such as tenons and pegs rather than modern fixings.

An antique ladder back chair provides textural contrast when paired with minimalist modern tables or used as a standalone accent piece in a neutral hallway or living space.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber surface.
