Nineteenth-century Irish giltwood mirrors typically feature hand-carved wooden frames coated in gold leaf, often displaying regional craftsmanship traits such as distinct moulding profiles and traditional joinery techniques.

These frames were generally constructed from softwoods or hardwoods such as pine or gesso-coated timber, layered with bole and applied gold leaf, joined at the corners with secure halving or mortise and tenon joints.

Authenticity is identified by examining the original mercury or silvered glass plate for foxing and oxidisation, inspecting the hand-applied gesso layers beneath the gold leaf, and verifying period-appropriate fixings and backboards.

An antique giltwood mirror adds a reflective focal point and textural contrast when hung above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or within a minimalist hallway to juxtapose historical craftsmanship with contemporary design.

Preservation requires keeping the mirror out of direct sunlight and high humidity, dusting gently with a dry, soft brush, and avoiding any liquid cleaners or solvents on the delicate gilt surface.
